Type Casting

Excerpts from “Type Casting in Film and Theatre”
By Yevette Rios

Melissa was featured in the article “Type Casting in Film and Theatre” sharing her thoughts on auditioning and the casting process.

Actors alike, tend to type themselves by what they wear and how they prepare for auditions. Take theatre actress, Melissa Strom, “When I got called in to [an] audition, I originally was going in for two characters, Lorraine and Francine. I was prepared for both parts, but when I started reading the Lorraine scene, we all started laughing. I was wearing a t-shirt and a full flowered skirt with my hair long. I liked and felt more like a ‘Francine’; so in a way I ‘typed’ my audition by preparing, dressing the part for Francine, and just being myself.”

Borrowing, again from theatre actress, Melissa Strom, “I had to work hard to break type casting. Learning dialects, being prepared for auditions, how I dress, having multiple headshots, having multiple resumes depending on what type of job audition I'm going in for.” Strom concludes, “This really helps to clarify things and helps an actor figure out why their not getting called into casting offices or not booking jobs.”
